Using traditional materials such as blocks and bricks, and later
prefabricated concrete‑facade elements, proved uneconomical to
transport and assemble. Their weight burdened the building’s basic
supporting structure, significantly increasing material consumption
and construction costs, and also limited how tall the construction
could be.
The combination of steel and glass reduced the building weight, but
several issues remained, including maintenance, corrosion and
thermal bridging. Aluminum façades address these problems and have
been widely used in façade design for over 30 years.
